Vintage Collectible Dolls by Type of Material

Over the years, Madame Alexander Dolls have been made of a variety of materials.  In the 1930's they were made of cloth.

The next generation of Madame Alexander Dolls were made of a mixture using materials such as sawdust, glue, paper, plaster of Paris and other materials known as composition.

In 1948, hard plastic Madame Alexander dolls were introduced.  In the beginning, the skin-tone color was painted, but later dolls had rose-colored plastic that didn't crack and peel like the painted.  These dolls had sharper features.
